Understanding Anesthesia
Anaesthesia comprises of the following:
- Analgesia – Pain relief – ensuring patient’s comfort
- Amnesia – loss of memory – minimising post operative trauma
- Muscle relaxation – inability to move, allowing the surgeon to operate unhindered
- Unconciousness – Being asleep
Anaesthesia can be delivered in multiple combinations of the above 3 principles
What are the stages of Anaesthesia
- Stage 1 – Analgesia
- Stage 2 – Delirium & confusion
- Stage 3 – Surgical Anaesthesia
- Stage 4 – Respiratory arrest
What is the stages of progression of Anaesthesia?
Firstly, is the Induction stage
Then the anaesthesia will be maintained
Then finally the emergence stage is when the patien is being woken up
Will I be asleep during the procedure
Not necessarily.
Depending on the nature of the procedure, and the condition of the patient, multiplle options are available.
How should I prepare for Anaesthesia?
Just be calm.
Please try to have your last intake of food or drink 6 hours prior to your planned procedure.
The safety of the patient under anaesthesia can be compromised if the patient has ingested food or drink less than 6 hours prior to the procedure
How soon after the Anaesthesia can i go home?
Depending on the surgery, and the recommendations of the surgeon, the patient may be discharged if
1. There must be no surgical complications post operatively, such as pain, nausea, bleeding.
2. Patient must befully awake
3. Fully alert and oriented to time, place, person
4. Able to eat and drink without any help
5. Normal vital signs as monitored by Health care worker
6. Patient may be discharged only if accompanied by a responsible adult. The patient is not allowed to drive or make legally binding decissions for the first 24 hours, after surgery
Typical Fees
The Practice is contracted to Discovery, and are also to accept any other medical aid.
Under normal circumstances, we do not charge any additional levies for services rendered.
We offer our services to non medical aid patients, without any prejudice.
